3.7 million currently call Berlin home
Total population: 3 769 962
The number of Berlin inhabitants continues to grow, as shown by the city Bureau of Statistics, and what stands out the most is the fast increasing number of Berliners holding a foreign passport.
Over 3.7 million people were registered in Berlin as of June 30, 2019. The Bureau of Statistics for Berlin-Brandenburg announced that exactly 3,723,914 people now called Berlin home.
Berlin's growth had in fact weakened ever so slightly. During the first half of 2018, close to 12,000 people joined the ranks of Berliners. Previously, around 40,000 and 60,000 people had joined the Berlin club each year since 2012. Since 2012 Berlin's population grew by 300,000 people.
Significantly more people hold a foreign passport in 2019
The increase in Berlin’s population is particularly due to newcomers with a foreign passport. The number of German inhabitants living in the capital has barely changed for a long time and is currently lower than three million. At the same time, the amount of Berliners with a foreign passport rose to around 725,000, from 460,000 eight years ago.
Just about every third Berliner has (1.24 million, 33.4 percent) some form of migration background, meaning a third of the cities population is either a foreigner or a descendant of immigrants.
The largest group among Berlin immigrants are the Turkish, making up close to 179,000 Berliners. Close to 142,000 people have Arabic roots, 137,000 Berliners are from the former Soviet Union, 115,000 people from Poland or have Polish parents and 83,000 are from former Yugoslavia.
The age of most Berliners is between 25 and 45 years old
A closer look at the age statistics for Berlin shows a relatively young city. For example, the age group 25-45 has the largest share of the total population, around 1,170,000 people, making up just under one third of all Berliners. Around 785,000 Berliners are between 45 and 60 years old - the second largest age group.
As a side note, population figures are statistically never 100% clear, as there are always an amount of residents unreported, living illegally in Germany, staying only for a limited time, or have forgotten to re-register following a lapsed registration, or left without deregistering.
